Book Review: The Jinni Key by Bethany Atazadeh

SYNOPSIS:
She holds the key to his heart, and he wants it back.

When Arie reveals her Gift, she thinks the worst is over. But she couldn’t be more wrong. The only one who can save her now is a mermaid named Rena.

Rena is the youngest daughter of the Sea King, and she’s dreamed of the surface for years. But her first visit on her 16th birthday isn’t what she expects. She watches a Jinni fall from the sky—and chooses to save him, despite her mother’s warnings that all Jinn are evil.

Once she meets Gideon, she can’t get him out of her mind. And maybe, with a little help from Arie and some magic of her own, she doesn’t have to...

The Jinni Key is a loose “Little Mermaid” retelling. Set in a world that humans share with mermaids, dragons, and the elusive Jinn, this is not the fairytale you remember…

I was excited to read this Little Mermaid retelling! I've always enjoyed the Disney version of The Little Mermaid, but Bethany's "loose" retelling is roughly akin to the original fairy tale which is a little darker and the end isn't as happy (Bethany's version is a HEA for the most part ^_~). While Rena probably looks more like Ariel with the red hair, her personality is more developed than Ariel's.

Rena can be tough to love at first but I didn't have a problem with her because I understood why she said and did the things she did. Although, it's funny because I thought she'd be more empathetic as The Jinni Key holder and the youngest sister of that royal family. Let's just say they aren't the kindest people. lol

I enjoyed the way Bethany gave us a flashback to give us a little backstory about Rena and her family. From there, it launches to how Rena came to land and then we start where the first book left off. The author seamlessly wove the beginning chapters and executed it flawlessly. I had wondered how and where we'd start off after reading the first chapter from the first book.

We don't get as much extended world building as I thought we would get after the first book. Other than the underwater kingdom, which I wish we got to see more of or at least again after the first time. I enjoyed seeing how the sea magic worked although very little is explained which is fine. I don't feel like we traveled around as much in this book as the first book which is fine but I wished we did because I enjoy Bethany's world development.

We don't get to see as much romance in this book, I feel like it's more like pining than romantic interaction which was well written so you won't get any mutual instant love here. I had hoped to see more character development in all the characters but I think Rena is the one who develops the most even though we get POV from Kadin and Arie. I liked Kadin and Arie's POV but struggled through them a bit. I do see them as necessary for the development of the book but weren't always gratifying to read, probably because of their stuck situations.

FYI, we don't get to see Kadin's full motley crew in the book so don't expect to see them. I did miss Naveed but glad Bosh was still around. Gideon was around but I didn't enjoy him as much because he seemed so surly in this book.

The pacing of the book read quickly but I did feel like it was rushed more towards the end, the climax wasn't as climatic as the first book in my opinion. While it wasn't quite what I wanted or expected, I appreciated that the author tied up the important loose ends.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this "loose" fairy tale retelling but the similarities between this book will be vastly different from the versions you know. It had less recognizable similarities than the previous book, which is fine but wanted to share that. I loved Rena's overall character development arc and Bethany's underwater world building. If you enjoyed The Stolen Kingdom, I think you'll like this book too and you'll get to learn what happened to the previous main characters!

3.5 out of 5 rating for me!

Book Review: How to Lose a Bachelor by Anna Banks

SYNOPSIS:
Lawyer Rochelle Ransom isn't looking for love. That ship had sailed--and sunk. Now all of her time is spent working and supporting her charity. But when an opportunity to win a large amount of prize money opens up, she's willing to sacrifice a little pride to raise some funds for a good cause.

Grant Duke has never forgotten Rochelle. And now he finally has a chance to get even with her for how she destroyed his heart. But when his plan for revenge takes a series of wrong turns, things head down a hilarious path of rediscovering love.

MINOR SPOILERS

I owe the author a huge apology, I've been given this book as an ARC 4 years ago. 4 YEARS! I've been meaning to pick it up to read but I had gotten busy and I forgot. My ARC TBR is longer than I care to admit and I have another book I need to read from this author. I plan to pick it up soon, especially after how much I enjoyed this book.

Ok, I'm not a reality show watcher so shows like The Bachelor and The Bachelorette aren't things I care to watch. However, I picked this book up and I wish I had picked it up sooner! I regret that I waited so long to start this book!

Right off the bat we are introduced to Rochelle who is a contestant for a good cause. I liked her and feel like she thought fairly logically except when emotions were involved (but that would be any person scorned). She's intelligent and independent so she's relatable in my humble opinion.

Grant is an enjoyable character too, I like how he is strong in his own right without being an "alpha male" that so many other romance authors write. He's kind and considerate. I liked how he wasn't all over the other contestants too and knew what he wanted and went after it.

I LOVED the crazy things Rochelle and Grant were willing to do. Rochelle to get voted off and Grant to keep her in. I found myself cackling at Rochelle's hijinks or embarrassed on her behalf. I could not do the things she did with that confidence. It makes for good entertainment material for sure!

I liked how the author sped past the boring parts of the reality TV but would have liked to see a bit more contestant interaction but it wasn't really necessary for the plot so I see why it was omitted.

Overall, a highly entertaining book that will have you laughing or cringing with second-hand embarrassment. Pick this book up if you want a fast and fluffy read that leaves you relaxed and feeling good.

4 out of 5 rating for me!

I've been excited to read The Stolen Kingdom as soon as I heard about it. I love fairy tales and fairy tale retellings and I wasn't disappointed. I do agree this is a "loose" retelling but I enjoyed how the author wove the story together. In my humble opinion, it's a tale all its own.

Book Review: Keeper by Kim Chance

Book Synopsis:
When a 200-year-old witch attacks her, sixteen-year-old bookworm Lainey Styles is determined to find a logical explanation. Even with the impossible staring her in the face, Lainey refuses to believe it—until she finds a photograph linking the witch to her dead mother.

After consulting a psychic, Lainey discovers that she, like her mother, is a Keeper: a witch with the exclusive ability to unlock and wield the Grimoire, a dangerous but powerful spell book. But there’s a problem. The Grimoire has been stolen by a malevolent warlock who is desperate for a spell locked inside it—a spell that would allow him to siphon away the world’s magic.

With the help of her comic-book-loving best friend and an enigmatic but admittedly handsome street fighter, Lainey must leave her life of college prep and studying behind to prepare for the biggest test of all: stealing back the book.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. I've been a fan of Kim's YouTube channel for a long time and rooted for her to get her book published. I'm super happy for her and fortunate to read the book.

I enjoyed the characters. I don't really feel like I love them as much as I expected but they were all likable to me. I think Maggie was my favorite. I like Ty as well but I feel like it was a bit too insta-love for me but I always love romance so I'm good with it for now.

Book Promo: Twisted Desire by Jessi Elliott

Title: Twisted Desire
Series: Twisted #2.5
Author: Jessi Elliott
Genre: Urban Fantasy (New Adult)
Release Date: April 16, 2019 Cover Credit: Arijana Karčić, Cover It! Designs

Being left to lead the fae alongside an annoyingly charming partner really screws with your life.
Skylar Chen just received the promotion of an eternity. After Tristan and Aurora trade their esteemed status for mundane life, it’s now her responsibility to lead the fae.
The catch? She has to work with Nikolai Sterling. With his constant smirks and dangerous good looks, he has a way of getting under Skylar’s skin like no one else. Even still, she’d much rather be getting under him.
Sexual tension aside, they have a bigger issue to deal with. The Experiment, a human organization built on hatred toward the fae, threatens to wipe them from existence. It’s time for Skylar and Nikolai to recruit allies, bring the fae together, and prepare for battle.
Fighting to protect her people is something Skylar can manage. It’s the skeletons in her designer closet that make opening up to Nikolai where she’s suddenly out of her element.
In this finale novella, the beloved side characters from Twisted Fate and Twisted Gift take center stage to bring down the organization set on destroying them.
“I got you something,” Nikolai says once we’re back in our hotel room.

I suppose it went without saying that Allison and I were swapping roommates
because Oliver followed her into the other room without a word.

I arch a brow at him, shrugging off my jacket and draping it over the armchair
beside the window. “What? Why?”

He shrugs, setting down the groceries we grabbed on the way back from the
meeting. “I thought it would cheer you up.”

“Oh,” is all I say. I told the group on the drive back that Jackson removed himself
from the fight, leaving out the part about him telling me to call him if things didn’t “work
out” between Nikolai and me. Nikolai must’ve told Jackson something, but I’ll be
damned if I bring it up to him.

Nikolai reaches into one of the bags and pulls out the same bottle of rosé I tasted
at Jackson’s. Hold on. The bottle has been opened. He stole the bottle from Jackson’s
bar. Smooth bastard.

A grin pulls at my lips as I take the bottle from him. “You—”

“Are amazing? Yeah, I know,” he says with a wink, leaning in slowly. “Skylar?”

“What?” I mutter.

“Kiss me,” he whispers back.

I set the bottle down. “Do I have to?” I feign disinterest even as my pulse ticks
faster with excitement.

His grin is still fully in place, his eyes filled with amusement. “No, but you want
to,” he lowers his voice, “almost as much as I do.”

“Mmm,” I hum, closing the rest of the space between us in a single breath before
our lips crash together, making me feel as if I could happily live in this moment forever.

Maybe that’s why I can admit to enjoying what it feels like when we kiss. When our lips
are locked, he can’t talk.

Book Review: The City of Veils by S. Usher Evans

Young Adult Fantasy meets Batman in this epic new trilogy from S. Usher Evans

Book Synopsis:
For the past three years, Brynna has been patrolling the streets of Forcadel as a masked vigilante, protecting the innocent and beating up bad guys. Her current target is Lord Beswick, a slumlord businessman who keeps the townsfolk in a vicious poverty cycle. But one fateful evening, she's captured by Felix, the captain of the king's guard, and told a shocking truth: her father and brother are dead, and she needs to hang up her mask and become queen.

Before long, she negotiates a deal with Felix: attend to her royal duties during the day and continue her vigilante mission to take out Lord Beswick at night---at least until her coronation. But the politics of Forcadel are as volatile as the streets, and Brynna isn't sure whom she can trust in the castle. With two royals dead in less than a month, she must use all her wits to make sure she isn't the third.

MINOR SPOILERS

I had fun reading this book. Brynna makes an interesting flawed but lovable protagonist. She uses her street skills in her vigilante life and her royal life which glad she didn't give up. I enjoyed the story and felt a rush when I finished it. But when I did finish, I started to think of things where the story could have improved but I still felt positively about the overall story.
